Sarmiento
Domingo Faustino Sarmiento--the caudillo of education, or, democrat of immigration. A social program to refound his Paris of the South as a suburb of Lyon--or at the very least Marseilles, if not Tunis, Kaunas, Aleppo... His photos are stern--reserved and fierce (I'm less certain about the reserved part), and always a touch stiff. Pragmatic, argumentative prose--which at the same moment could somehow acknowledge, almost by default, an unexpected beauty of place--even his own.
